GISCorps volunteer creating web maps for World Humanitarian Summit (WHS)

The UN Secretary-General will convene the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) in Istanbul in 2016. The goal of this summit is to find new ways to tackle humanitarian needs in our fast-changing world. This three-year initiative is being managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The WHS requested the assistance of a GISCorps volunteer to create several interactive maps for this event. Katie Mayr, a GIS Specialist with City of Charlotte, NC was recruited for this project and will be working with WHS representatives in coming months.

Katie assists OCHA officials with mapping participants signed up for updates via the WHS website. The OCHA officials use this information to target underserved areas to ensure maximum participation worldwide.

Katie receives weekly (Excel based) data feeds per email that she translates into a web-based dashboard that displays a map and a listing of participants. This dashboard was created using Tableau Public, a free online dashboarding software that allows for frequent updates without breaking URL links or modifying embeddable code.

The dashboard can be viewed by following this: link: http://public.tableausoftware.com/profile/ktmay#!/vizhome/WHSParticipants/Dashboard1.

This project is long term and ongoing.
