By Chen Li, GISCorps Volunteer

On April 5th, 2007, the second Afghanistan volunteer mission was launched. This mission is also in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Afghanistan Information Management Services (AIMS) and our volunteer, Chen Li, will spend one month of his vacation in Kabul. Chen Li is a GIS Specialist with the ESRI Northwest Office and his areas of specialization are with ArcSDE, ArcIMS, and ArcGIS Server applications. He will train AIMS staff on the use of these applications and will also help in geospatially enabling one of AIMS' current databases.

So far I have been busy designing the ArcGIS Server implementation for existing GeoBase, UN projects tracking database system. I also gave a 3-hour Introduction ArcGIS Server to all staff of AIMS about 15 people; in order to make the spatial enabling started. I’m also waiting for a schedule to host a training of .Net programming for AGS.

My goal is to have the project scope set; Have AIMS to be self sufficient to work with AGS; and have a prototype demo version ready to show before I leave....

My 3 weeks mission with AIMS is complete. With a team of about 10 people, we designed the web mapping application for the project GeoBase; programmed prototype using ArcGIS Server to query and map UN aid project activities. ArcGIS Server is new to AIMS; the project is a first GIS project requiring GIS user and Non-GIS .Net programmers of AIMS to work together. The project related GIS training and support were provided to AIMS. The project will deliver web based mapping for locations of Activities, symbolized by activity types or values, and mapping for administrative regions of activities’ statistics values.

On April 24, 2007, I presented at the 1st Annual Geo Conference in Afghanistan.

"...I wanted to add my big "Thank You" to GISCorps for being the bridge to Chen Li's helping Afghanistan and AIMS. With his high technical skills, willing participations, cultural involvement, and consistently friendly demeanor, he was an ideal and beneficial GISCorps volunteer for AIMS. The staff was so grateful for his timely and professional contribution.

Thank you for making this possible,

Best regards,
